Two Day Survival Course

£150 per person 2 days

What’s life without adventure? Get away from it all and learn to survive a night in the wilderness with our expert survival instructor. Cook your own food over an open fire, discover skills that can save your life, and spend the night under the stars in a beautiful woodland, nestled in a shelter you made yourself.

Available late May to late September, last weekend of every month. 10am Saturday to 4pm Sunday.

Building on knowledge gained from our one-day course or starting from scratch, this two-day, one-night survival training course will give you all the knowledge you need to survive in the wilderness in a temperate climate.

Under the guidance of our friendly expert instructor, you’ll learn all of the below skills – and more! The exact schedule may vary depending on weather, seasonality and the flow of the course.

The whole course will take place in beautiful Dragon Wood. Lying in a peaceful valley on the Essex/Suffolk border, our woodland is out of earshot of major roads and is managed as part of our activity centre in a nature-friendly way to encourage biodiversity. It’s blessed with an abundance of flora and fauna: you’ll be sharing your home for the night with deer, badgers, buzzards, foxes and more. If it’s a clear night, you’ll see the stars from the adjoining meadow.

Day One

  • firelighting, using both traditional and modern methods
  • shelter building, from emergency ‘get through it’ types to more sturdy and long-lasting ‘base camp’ structures
  • knot tying – an important skill in danger of being lost, proper knots can get you out of a lot of trouble! You’ll be given a paracord for practice and structure-building on the course, plus your own paracord bracelet to take away with you
  • water collection and purification, with methods ranging from simple filtration and boiling to more technical ways
  • outdoor cooking, preparing yourself a hot meal and drink using your own well-built fire from earlier in the day. See packing list for recommended foods to bring; emergency survival rations are available to purchase when booking or on the day.
  • hammock construction, with weather protection and mount/dismount practice ready for a night in the woods. Sleeping equipment is also on the packing list, but your hammock, tarp and cordage will all be supplied.

Day Two

  • firelighting (again – we do not allow fires to burn overnight in the woods)
  • foraging skills
  • game hunting, including basic trap setting. You will not be catching any game, this is just for information in case of emergency!
  • animal identification by ‘sign’ and tracking
  • knife and axe safety with instruction in using both in practical, helpful and safe ways
  • bow and arrow making with basic woodland materials (you can keep what you make!)
